Hunting Good to Great Reads
Walking through a bookstore these days can be overwhelming. With so many authors, genres and sub-genres, it can be confusing and difficult for a reader to find something new to enjoy. I had this issue a few years ago so I searched the Internet for help. I was looking for a few recommendations so I wouldn’t have to read the same series over and over again. That is when I discovered Goodreads. While searching the massive website, I discovered many recommendations for an author based out of New Zealand. I want to share this recommendation with you.
Nalini Singh has been drawn to writing since she was a small child. She dabbled in many careers during her adult life including being a Librarian, Lawyer and Candy Factory General Hand. In 2002, her dream came true when Silhouette Desires wanted to publish one of her stories. She now has one Paranormal Romance series and one Urban Fantasy series under her belt and a mass of fans who are hanging from her every word.
The world has divided into cultures of race. Each feels they are superior to the others but one seems to have control. The Psy are a race without emotions. They are described as cool, unloving and outsiders are not welcome within their guarded society. The Changlings are both human and animal. Their society is built on all the emotions that the Psy breed out. Each pack draws strength from love and loyalty of its members.
|Slave to Sensation|
The Psy have discovered a secret within their society. The emotionless state has started making some of their people unstable. Evidence of murders committed by Psy has been surfacing. The leaders of the society, the Council, cannot let this information leak to the public. The cover up of all cover ups has begun. Changling women from different packs start disappearing and are found murdered. The packs must infiltrate the Psy community to find the killer.
Singh has created one of the most unique worlds I have ever read about within the Psy-Changling series. Her characters prove that people from drastically different backgrounds can find a common ground. Some can even find love with who they thought were the enemy. Within the nine books that have been published, we have met characters who are as different as can be but all have qualities that make you cheer them on in their individual battles. You will start cheering and wanting more from your favorite characters. Once you pick up one of these books, you will not be able to put them down. The tenth installment, Kiss of Snow, is scheduled to be released July 1, 2011.
Guild Hunter Series
Vampires walk among us. They are stronger, faster, and gain power each year they live past the normal human lifespan. Most are kept in check by their creators, the angels, but power can go to anyone’s head. That is where the Guild comes in. They are contracted by Angels to bring in rogue vampires to face justice. The best tracker in the Guild, Elena Deveraux, is given a contract surrounded by mystery. Could she really be working for one of the most infamous and cruel Archangels who control the world?
The Guild Hunter series drops us into another unique world with a new twist on vampire creation and mythology. Vampires are like a controlled substance. Someone who would like to be turned must pass the Angel’s vast testing process. If the person is chosen to be turned, they will be contracted to their angel creator. At the top of the hierarchy sits the Cadre, which includes ten Archangels that hold power through fear. Even at the top, they have to beware of being toppled by power plays. We currently have three action intense books following Elena, angels, and vampires. The forth installment, Archangel’s Blade, is expected to be released in September 2011.
I find the rating system on Goodreads an efficient way to rate books I would like to read. If a book has a 3.5 out of a 5 star rating, it is always worth picking up. Eleven out of Twelve of Singh’s full length published books average above four stars. The one book that has not hit four stars is sitting at an average of 3.98 stars. This is an amazing feat when thousand of readers have reviewed and rated her publications.
To help spread the love, I will be giving away the first book in each of Nalini Singh’s series. To win, all you have to do is comment with the answer to this question: What draws you to buy a book you know nothing about? I will pick a winner for each book randomly. Let the fun begin!
