Woo Hoo! Let the Fall Television Season Begin

Normally, most people aren’t happy about it being a Monday. Of course, I’m not most people. For me, Monday means the family returns to their commitments and I am left alone with the voices in my head! Okay, yes, I know that sounds weird but I’m a writer, and I talk to myself and the voices regularly talk back. In the meanwhile, tonight marks the return of the fall television season, hallelujah! Old favorites showcase their season premieres and new shows debut to see if they can win our affection. My poor, abandoned DVR, lonely after nothing to watch all […]

Relationship Fans Are Brutal

As a romance author, you might say couples are my thing. I don’t mean that I sit around plotting about how to get a couple together (well, actually I do). I don’t mean that I sit and analyze what issues a couple has (well, actually I do that too). What I do mean is that I love to watch the journey of the couple as they go through their ups and downs, their communication issues, their misunderstandings, their passionate clinches and those profound moments when they click. I’m a fan of the whole enchilada in a relationship. The good. The […]

Saturday Smackdown: Beckett versus Dallas

Literary cops are an enticing breed! Two years ago when Castle debuted, I took one look at the then very shorthaired Stana Katic (actress who portrays Kate Beckett on Castle) and thought Eve Dallas! She was long-legged, rangy, tough and didn’t put up with bull. Like Eve, she had tragedy in her background, being a cop is ingrained into the fabric of her identity and she doesn’t have a lot of patience for fools. The cops that surround them are very much apart of the story as the cases they solve. Castle Of course, Beckett has Castle and Eve has […]

Castle Heats Up

As all my readers know, I am thoroughly devoted to the ABC series Castle. And why wouldn’t I? Castle follows best-selling novelist Richard Castle as he uses his connections to partner with Detective Kate Beckett of the NYPD. He wants to follow her around in order to base his new character on her. We’ve watched their relationship evolve from cautious and wary to true friendship. In last week’s first part of the two-part event, we watched the protective instincts within Castle sharpen as Kate became the focus for a serial killer who was dedicating his kills to Nikki Heat. This […]

Create a Character

One of the questions I hear frequently is how do I create my characters? Where do they come from? What inspired me? This is also the hardest question to answer because characters can come from anywhere. They can spring fully formed from my forehead like Athena did from Zeus or percolate in the foamy waves generated by my sea of imagination like Aphrodite or they can simply take shape over time, like a carefully worn path through the mountains that the river cuts relentlessly. Where Do Characters Come From? Ask any author where his or her characters come from and […]
